Contrology, Pilates Bequeathed to the World With Love
Invented by German born Joseph Pilates (pronounced Pi-la-tees) some 70 years ago, the original total body conditioning program was defined as “Contrology”. Contrology was the basic fundamental of the Pilates’ Method consisting of 34 mat work exercises. “Return to Life through Contrology” was originally published in 1945. The inventive German instructor taught his students to believe that “contrology exercise develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” In 1920 this revolutionary method of physical and mental conditioning was brought to the United States. By 1940 Mr. Pilates had his own studio on Eighth Avenue in New York City. Many new students flocked to his sessions, dancers in particular. His techniques allowed dancers to perform at new levels of expertise and also to extend the time they could continue to dance. Other professions and just heath conscious people benefited from his methodology too.
Following his death, rights to the Pilates’ name were sold. Sean Gallagher acquired the original contrology studio and exercise instruction service marks in August of 1992. Gallagher immediately set out to monopolize the Pilates surname and restrict who could teach the method. He filed suits with several companies intimidating hundreds of fitness instructors into paying yearly fees to him.
In 1996 Gallagher sued Balanced Body, the world’s largest manufacturer of Pilates equipment. On October 2000 a decision in Manhattan’s federal court declared that Pilates was ruled generic, similar to yoga. This was indeed a victory for the fitness community as well as the general public.
Joseph Pilates died in 1967 at the the age of 87. “I am fifty years ahead of my time,” Joe had claimed. His inspiring and beneficial work–contrology, now commonly know as Pilates–will live on forever bequeathed to the world with love.
Answers to Many Questions About Pilates
I have recently received many questions about the Pilates Method. Even though I don’t teach Pilates, I have attended several classes, including training sessions. I have also asked many of my students who have been attending Pilates classes how they react, feel and what results they have noticed. Therefore, I am going to share what I have learned in hopes that it will answer most of your questions.
What is Pilates?
Developed in the 1920s by the physical trainer, Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method teaches you about breathing with movement, body mechanics, balance, coordination, positioning of the body, spatial awareness, strength and flexibility.
The basic principles will teach you how to flow from one movement to the next by:
· Centering
· Alignment
· Control
· Precision
· Flowing Movement
· Relaxation
With emphasis on stretching as well as strengthening of muscles, the Pilates system works the body as a whole, coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s center (known as the “power house”).
What are the Benefits?
Besides the improvement in strength, flexibility, posture and coordination, other benefits include a natural lengthening and slimming. For years, the Pilates Method has been popular with dancers, enhancing the lean look of their bodies and improving their movement. Many of the certified instructors of Pilates have a dance background and teach that every one of our movements start in that center core or “power house.”
What Do I Need to Know before Beginning Pilates?
As with all other fitness programs, before you start make sure that your physician approves. The Pilates approach, as with Yoga, believes in individual progress in a non-competitive, non-stress and low-impact arena. Designed to work the body as a whole, Pilates caters to everyone, from beginners to advanced and is suitable for all age groups.
Start slowly and listen to your body. It doesn’t happen overnight! For optimal effectiveness, it is recommended that you practice Pilates two to three times a week depending on your goals and level of fitness. I suggest that a balanced workout schedule will not only include Pilates, but also some combination of cardiovascular activity such as fast walking, jogging, aerobic stepping, swimming, biking, etc.
What Important Questions Should I Ask?
There was a time, until recently, when someone had to receive special and time-intensive training before being certified to teach any form of Pilates. My worry is that there are instructors teaching Pilates and/or Yoga without sufficient training and understanding of the methods. Be sure to attend and/or watch the class you plan to take, and observe what kind of instruction is happening. Ask the instructor about his/her background and certification (they may have regular group fitness instructor certification, but not an extensive background in the Pilates Method).
Is the environment in which the class is being held comfortable? Do I like the instructor and the teaching method? Would I be motivated by this instructor? Talk to the other students in the class and find out how long they have been attending and what they like and/or don’t like about the class. I have asked the students who attend my non-Pilates Method classes how they have taken to Pilates. Most are enthusiastic, but also enjoy the cross-training. A few prefer using the Resist-A-Ball which also produces similar results when used properly and on a regular basis.
Taught properly, the Pilates Method is definitely a winner.
But, as with any fitness program, you must be committed to embrace it on a consistent and persistent basis, along with practicing proper nutrition to accomplish and see rewarding results!
Pilates Abdominal Exercise - Rolling Like a Ball
Rolling Like a Ball – The most popular of Pilates abdominal exercise techniques, rolling like a ball is said to be effective and fun. It is easy and quick to perform knowing that all you need to do initially is to sit up and pull the ankles of your feet near your buttocks. To make the best moves, make sure to wrap your hands around your ankles and buttocks. Then, move your head toward your knees. From there, lift your feet from the surface, then allowing you to balance through your tailbone. This method also includes tightening your stomach, while rolling in backward direction until the shoulders reaches the floor. One thing to note here is not to roll on the neck. Try to do this in five repetitions.

Pilates Abdominal Exercise - Criss Cross
Crisscross – The second most popular Pilates abdominal exercise, you can do the crisscross by first slightly raising your head. While doing the movements, bring your knees toward your chest. Position your hands gently just at the back of your head, but make sure not to interlace your fingers. From here, inhale slowly and twist your position to the right. Bring the left of your elbow toward your right knee, but make sure you extended your right leg. Now, start to inhale and go back to the initial position. Make sure to repeat the step in five sets.

Pilates Abdominal Exercise - The Hundred
The Hundred – To do this method, start lying on your back. Bring your knees above your chest and put your arms extending on the sides. Lift your chest and chin a bit and then your legs on upward direction. To proceed, lift your arms about six inches and pump them down and up fast, but while doing this, make sure to exhale. Pump your arms again for about five times and inhale. To make the best result, repeat the movements ten times.
This is one of the first moves that are in someones pilates routine.
